In a format designed for tactics and matchups, it has almost become an unsaid rule to not line-up a finger spinner against a like-handed batter. The data backs up the theory to a fair extent. In the IPL since 2023, right-handers batting in the top-seven have struck at 148 against right-arm off-spin, while lefties have gone at 134. Likewise, lefties have struck at 149.41 against left-arm orthodox, righties at 131.96.
Those numbers are by and large limited to specialist spinners in operation. Ahead of the @L0$ of IPL 2026, Delhi Capitals were the only bowling unit to have gone at under nine runs per over in the tournament. Driven by their opponents and the conditions on Tuesday, they weakened that suit in their team selection, with Auqib Nabi making room for Nitish Rana in their bowling XI.
It may be noted though that two of SRH's three defeats in the tournament were brought about by a new-ball specialist ratting their top-order: Jacob Duffy in the tournament opener and Mohammed Shami - @L1$ - a week later. DC's line-up is set in a way to bowl at least eight overs of spin in every game with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav in their ranks. 46.2% of their overs in the IPL since 2025 have been by spinners, a split only exceeded by KKR (46.7%). That though isn't favorable in Hyderabad, where spinners have averaged 78.22 in night games (ER: 9.8) in the IPL since 2025, compared to 22.63 for quicks (ER: 9.35).
Axar has been used to taking the new ball for India and in the IPL. Heading into the contest, his matchup versus Abhishek Sharma read: 6 off 8, two dismissals. The skipper opted for Rana instead: off-spinner against two left-handers. Abhishek's strike-rate against spin in T20s since 2024 stood at 212.68, 177.48 against right-arm off-break. In a possible event of an early wicket, the corresponding numbers for Ishan Kishan read 184.72 and 175.75. The latter didn't happen, but Rana slipped in a quiet six run over. DC overdid the tactic, the part-timer returned for the fifth, and was promptly taken for three sixes, two by Abhishek.
It was Axar eventually, who broke the 97-run stand in the ninth over, but an expensive one from Kuldeep Yadav not long after perhaps muddled the thought process. The visitors opted for Rana in the 15th over, it yielded 23, and he finished with 0/55 from four overs with as many from Axar and Kuldeep unused.
The only previous instance of Rana bowling four overs in an IPL game, came in @L2$ one, wherein he was the seventh bowler to be introduced in an innings that saw 16 overs out of 19.2 bowled by spin.
As it turned out, Rana did get to bowl all his deliveries to lefties, but 53 were taken off those (barring wides). Abhishek scored 45 off 15 off him (SR: 286.66), making it the only instance of a left-hander taking a right-arm off-spinner for over 35 runs in an IPL game. The irony of it all is it is Rana himself has defied this particular matchup with the bat. Of the 41 left-handers to have faced at least 100 deliveries of right-arm off-break in the tournament's history, his strike-rate of 159.7 is only exceeded by Abhishek and Sunil Narine. Of all the player versus player matchups in 19 years of the IPL, no one has scored more runs at a higher strike-rate than he has off Ravichandran Ashwin (141 off 71, 1 dismissal, SR: 198.59).
Kuldeep had one expensive over, but his economy rate against righties and the lefties in the IPL in the Impact Player era has been identical (7.82 and 8.07). As for Axar, he has been a much sought after defensive bowler in T20Is as well as the IPL. DC's tactics on the night were more a function of them being wary of their opponents, @L3$.
