New heroes and new template emerge at Chepauk

While Sanju Samson sizzled with a ton, the performances of Jamie Overton and Gurjapneet Singh give CSK hope

At toss time in Chennai on Saturday (April 11), there was great anticipation around the stadium for one name. Chennai Super Kings had terribly missed Dewald Brevis in their first three games of IPL 2026. Understandably, when Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed the young South African's inclusion for this crucial clash against Delhi Capitals, there was a cheer from the crowd.

However, Gaikwad wasn't done. More information was on the way, as the skipper also confirmed the presence of fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh in the playing XI. The left-arm pacer, bought by CSK ahead of the 2025 season, had never featured in the IPL before. Gurjapneet was also replacing the most experienced bowler in an attack that has already lacked bite. Matt Henry was out. Once handed the ball immediately after the conclusion of the Powerplay in the second half, Gurjapneet joined an exclusive list of players to pick up a wicket off the very first ball they bowled in the IPL. Axar Patel saw one short and wide and went for the cut, only for Sarfaraz Khan to take a stunning catch and set Chepauk roaring.

With his tail up, Gurjapneet banged in a short delivery second ball, which sailed over David Miller and Sanju Samson for a boundary. The rest of the over, though, he kept testing Miller with hard-length deliveries that had enough bounce to keep him on his toes. If that wasn't enough, the barrage of back-of-a-length deliveries continued from the other end as well, with Jamie Overton now posing problems. The result? The in-form Sameer Rizvi was sent packing. Coming back into the attack after a few overs, Overton then went on to castle Miller with a pacy cross-seam delivery pitched on a good length that zipped through the surface.

Yes, this was indeed unfolding at Chepauk - a venue historically known for its spin-friendly surfaces. CSK deployed a four-man pace attack, which effectively became five with the inclusion of Shivam Dube. While Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed did their bit, it was Overton and Gurjapneet who consistently extracted bounce, ensuring any batter without a solid backfoot game struggled. While the left-arm pacer didn't add to his wicket tally, Overton continued to chip away and finished with a four-fer. More importantly, the duo emerged as strong options for CSK to utilise at home going forward.

The two combined to bowl 48 deliveries on the night. Of those, 25 were back-of-a-length or short, yielding just 23 runs and two wickets. From a good length, only 24 runs came off 20 deliveries. The most startling fact? The pair bowled just three deliveries at a fuller length, sticking rigidly to their plan.

On the eve of the game, head coach Stephen Fleming had pointed out how not having a clear identity at Chepauk had become a problem, contributing to their poor run at home of late. "Over the last five or six years, the game and the ground have really changed. We're learning now it's going to be a good wicket this year. So you really have to change your game plan and the type of players you've had. Even the core group of players may need to change if you are going to play on a hard and fast wicket," Fleming had said.

By no means was it an excuse. For a while now, CSK have made their displeasure known over the nature of wickets at their home venue. But acceptance is key. CSK appear to have reached a point where they realise the surface may not assist spin for the foreseeable future. From that standpoint, the presence of Gurjapneet and Overton offers a breath of fresh air, with the franchise potentially moving towards a new template for success at home.

On Saturday, there was certainly a buzz at the venue - the kind that hasn't been seen in recent times. What followed in the first half was equally refreshing. They love a swashbuckling Indian wicketkeeper in this part of the world, don't they? Sanju Samson's second audition at home in yellow proved a success.

Already one of the most popular figures in the dressing room after MS Dhoni, Samson's credentials went up a notch following a spectacular century - the first of this year's edition. He had already been in the spotlight before and during India's T20 World Cup campaign, eventually winning the Player of the Tournament award. Life at CSK hadn't been smooth, though, with three successive failures at the start of his new journey. But for a player in such rich form, it always felt like a matter of time before he found his groove again.

CSK's bowling coach Eric Simmons revealed after the game that Samson remained as calm as ever despite the false start and even drew parallels with Dhoni. "I've been privileged to spend many years being involved with MS Dhoni," Simmons said. "He's one of the calmest cricketers I've ever come across, and Sanju Samson's not far behind that. He just understands the game from that perspective. I've seen no panic. There was never any doubt that this was coming. You've just got to keep trusting and believing in your quality, and he certainly has that in abundance."

The five-time champions came into the fixture on the back of six consecutive home losses. By all means, no one would have batted an eyelid had it become seven, given the predicament both teams found themselves in. At one point, Chepauk was a fortress where much of their success was built. For CSK to get anywhere close to those glory days again, they must start delivering at home. With the squad undergoing significant changes in recent years, they need new heroes to step up and make winning a habit again. For now, the immediate goal is to back this up against Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday (April 14).
